validate input for a field element

no great experience with php,
I need to validate alphanumeric input of a 16 char field in this way:


AAAAAA99A99A999A

are the numbers and characters always in the same location and same length?
if so a regex validation (http://fabrikar.com/forums/index.php?wiki/regular-expression-validation/) of this should work:

[a-zA-Z]{6}[0-9]{2}[a-zA-Z]{1}[0-9]{2}[a-zA-Z]{1}[0-9]{3}[a-zA-Z]{1}

if they are not in the same location length then I think this would work

[a-zA-Z0-9]{16}
